The core modules form the common basis for students on the program. Participation in these modules is compulsory for all students.

ABMM weekly during winter term (Tue/Fri)

Hot Topics weekly during summer term (Tue)

Scientific Competency yearly in March (5 weeks block)

The lecture series “Advanced Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine” (ABMM) (→ Module Description) is a mandatory module every Tuesday and Friday from 8:15 to 9:45 druing winter term. It covers advanced molecular topics and brand new research from Cologne investigators. Each session is led by a principal investigator from our research site. The first part of the lecture provides a foundation in key concepts of biochemistry and molecular biology, while the second part builds upon this groundwork, highlighting the group’s most recent research advances and discoveries. By attending the lecture, you will develop an in-depth understanding of advanced biochemical and molecular medicine concepts, including reaction mechanisms, molecular disease bases, and modern analytical technologies. The module is completed with a written exam.

The seminar module “Hot Topics in Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine” (HT) (→ Module Description) takes place every Tuesday from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. during the summer term. Through focused sessions on disease mechanisms, drug action, and immunity, students gain the expertise to identify and explore emerging research trends in the field. The module culminates in a dynamic mini-conference in July, where participants present and discuss their own selected “hot topics” in front of peers (talk represents the final assessment).

The “Scientific Competency” (SciComp) (→ Module DescriptionWorkshop is an intensive five-week course designed to help students develop essential skills for planning, conducting, and communicating scientific research. Through a combination of practical exercises and expert guidance, participants learn how to structure scientific texts, understand different publication formats, apply proper referencing techniques, and design clear, effective figures. The course takes place annually in March as an intensive block seminar. The final assessment consists of a short research proposal submitted at the end of the course.
